Calcination: In the simplest sense, water washed grades, chosen to achieve a desired finished product requirement, are ground, heat treated at temperatures near or above 650° C, and ground again to reduce fused particles formed during the calcination. Calcining methods can be either flash with pneumatically fed raw material experiencing a residence time measured in seconds, or conventional (soak) with gravity fed raw material experiencing a residence time in excess of 30 minutes. Soak calciners can be of either vertical or rotary design.
Calcined grades are used in many applications based on various properties of the calcined clay, and the resulting finished product characteristics are improved. There is a calcined clay to improve the property or decrease the cost in cement, coatings, inks, polishes, or polymers.
